Secular Argument in Defense of Traditional Marriage

A challenge to the Defense of Marriage Act is being heard in the Iowa Supreme Court.  While reading about it on I was struck by a line from the amicus brief filed by Liberty Counsel.

Marriage between one man and one woman is a historically shared value that transcends time and cultures. Untying the knot that holds together traditional marriage will unravel the family, destabilize the culture, and hurt children.

I think these two sentences sum up the best secular argument for protecting traditional marriage.  What do you think?

  1. And what is specifically the value of “traditional marriage”. While it is important for children to have a secure and stable environment, no study has shown that gay marriage cannot offer that. And why should we assume that “culture” is going to destabilize. What culture anyway. Culture has always changed. Slavery, and selling your daughter were at one time (and sadly still are) part of certain cultures?

There’s nothing worse than religious nonsense trying to pass a pseudo-secularism.
