New, Pro-Choice Health and Human Services Secretary Appointee

President Elect Obama has nominated former Senator Tom Daschle as his choice for Secretary of Health and Human Services.  He is to replace pro-life Secretary Mike Leavitt when the new administration takes over in 2009.  To learn more about Daschle’s record and the changes he could make in this position, read this article on

What’s the pro-abortion side saying?  Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America said:

“Sen. Daschle will bring thoughtful progressive leadership to the Department of Health and Human Services. We appreciate his recent efforts to help defeat two abortion bans in South Dakota. We had a good working relationship with him during his tenure as Senate leader and look forward to continuing that relationship as he assumes this pivotal role in the Obama administration.”

The same article where this quote was posted also pointed out, however, that while a senator Daschle voted for a ban on partial birth abortion, as well as for the Unborn Victims of Violence Act.

I guess what remains to be seen is how a former senator with a 50% NARAL rating will perform on the cabinet of a former senator with a 100% NARAL rating.
